Kid Writing-Spelling by Using Kid Crowns
For high-frequency irregular words, the students relied on Kid Crowns that had been introduced by the teacher (Feldgus, E., et.al, 2017). Phonetically irregularly spelled words are introduced when an authentic writing opportunity takes place then added to the word wall each week, one or two at a time, and eventually one will become a kid crown. Kid crowns make irregular sight words memorable and the simple rhyme such as the “king of ing” or the “star of are” supports student learning of these difficult types of words students just need to know (Feldgus, E., et.al, 2017). To encourage the use of Kid Crowns, our participants would make a crown for a stuffed animal, and the student would pick up the stuffed animal when they needed to spell the irregular word.
