Kid Writing-Using Teacher-Made Resources to Spell
Because Kid Writing is a teaching style or strategy, not a program (Gentry, 2017), teachers are encouraged to make additional spelling resources that correlate with the type of writing they are teaching. Throughout the school year, we observed lessons on writing personal narratives, fall stories, fairytales, and informational texts. One teacher participant, Selena, created individual folders for her students with genre or topic specific words the students could use as a reference. We found this encouraged even more independence with spelling, as well as the use of more difficult words the students had often heard and read in authentic texts, but not studied
